Government appoints expert team to help bolster maritime industry

The Government has appointed a team of experts to advise on the future of the maritime industry in the UK, it has been announced. The agenda for discussion includes the development of new technology surrounding autonomous vessels and digital ports to ensure that the UK remains a world leader in the maritime industry.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling, who back in February announced his plans to ensure that the UK remains at the “fore front” of the industry, announced the news on 27th March. Chairing the new panel will be Chief Executive of Renewable Energy UK, Hugh McNeal, and will consist of both industry and academic experts.

However, what the Government wants most is to hear from those in the industry itself, so Grayling has launched an invite for evidence on Maritime 2050 – the long term strategy and opportunity goals laid out to ensure that the maritime industry thrives. The Government is encouraging anyone actively involved in the maritime industry or anyone with an interest in it to read the document and provide their feedback, with the opportunity to contribute closing on 16th May 2018.

Focuses highlighted in Maritime 2050 include reducing emissions, disposal of waste at sea, improving infrastructure and welcoming new technology, such as autonomous ships. The long-term goal is to inspire overall economic growth in the UK by providing certainty for investors and making the maritime industry more efficient overall.

Chris Grayling stated: “Maritime 2050 is a once in a generation opportunity to set and ambitious vision for the future of this key sector and I encourage all of those who depend on shipping to have their say.”
